Entries are filling for the 1st Dunk Classic, being held at the South Pine Sporting Complex by the Northside Wizards during the weekend of June 9-10, the first two days of the Queens’s Diamond Jubilee long weekend.

A broad range of nominations have been fielded thus far, with teams from the Boondall, Carina, Auchenflower and Ipswich club competitions currently in the mix.

Nominations will close once the maximum twelve team limit has been reached. First in, best dressed.

Team nominations are $350, which covers a minimum guaranteed five games, as well as referees, scorebench and first aid.

The event, sanctioned by Basketball Queensland, offers $650 to the champion team, and $350 to the runners-up.

The Hotsteppas have won the inaugural Dunk Invitational at the University of Sunshine Coast, following a 57-40 victory against Hustlas in the Championship Final on Sunday afternoon.

The group, comprised largely of former and current representative players from the Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Gladstone areas, led 35-22 at halftime where they maintained a double-digit margin until the final buzzer.

They had earlier in the day completed pool play undefeated 5-0, which included a 57-38 win on Saturday morning against their grand final opponents, despite beginning the game trailing 14-2.

Kyle Kiernan and Wes Rand were afterwards named to the All-Invitational team, along with Fraser Lowrie (Ghosties), Glen Sales and Dennis Thornton (Rusty Trombones).

The 2013 Invitational will return to the University of Sunshine Coast for the long weekend of 26-28 January, again catering to teams of a social A/B grade standard.

All systems are go for the DUNK team as final touches are put to preparations for the inaugural 2012 Dunk Invitational.

Hosted by the University of Sunshine Coast, the tournament will take place over the weekend of January 21-22.

Six men’s teams are set to compete, comprising of entries from Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.

The tournament is the brainchild of DUNK staff who wanted to give ballers the opportunity to play in a social setting whilst being able to enjoy the laidback atmosphere of the Sunshine Coast.

First games start at 10:00am each day, with the last tipping off at 4:30pm. Referees and scorebench are provided, meaning that teams only need to turn up and play. A social event has also been organised for all event participants at the Alex Bar & Grill on the Saturday night.

2013 promises to be bigger and better with the Australia Day public holiday forming a long weekend, allowing for three days of competition from January 26-28.
